OnePlus emerged as the startup company that introduced the original flagship as the OnePlus One. This device was quite cheap and brought amazing specifications that were equivalent to the flagships of the year. The years have passed and OnePlus has slowly changed into a company that produces top flagships. This year, the company introduced the most expensive OnePlus phones to date – OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The company announced that focusing on the premium market alone would not be enough to ensure long-term growth. A few months ago, the company unveiled its plans to bring a mid-range smartphone, thus increasing the smartphone portfolio. This gives birth to the OnePlus Nord 5G, which after many leaks, is finally official.
Today, July 21, OnePlus decided to unveil its next big thing for the premium mid-range market in the form of the OnePlus Nord. The Chinese company used Augmented Reality to bring an exciting event. This is the first time a smartphone maker has used AR to unveil new products. OnePlus has revealed that Nord was created with three main goals – Cameras, User Experience and Performance. According to the Chinese OEM, these three points represent the highest demand of the user. User demand was north for Nord creation.
OnePlus Nord Specifications
Under the hood, the OnePlus Nord features the Snapdragon 765G SoC. This chipset is amazing in terms of mid-range, but it does not match today’s flagships, nor last year’s Snapdragon 855+. It is an energy efficient 7nm with enough performance to run the vast majority of Google Play applications and games. Most importantly, this chipset ensures seamless 5G connectivity. This chipset will be combined with 6 GB, 8 GB and even 12 GB of RAM. But keep in mind that the 6 GB variant is a cheaper version that will be exclusive to the Indian market.
Nord displays a beautiful 6.44-inch AMOLED display covered with Gorilla Glass 5. It is an FHD + panel with a refresh rate of 90Hz. This panel has sRGB and P3, but unfortunately does not include HDR support. Due to the nature of OLED, the on-screen fingerprint scanner is guaranteed. Nevertheless, OnePlus still offers face unlock as an option.
Unlike previous leaks, the OnePlus Nord does not have a selfie with a hole, but a composite pill. Combines a 32MP sensor (Sony IMX616) with an 8MP wide-angle camera with a 105-degree lens. For a quick comparison, the OnePlus 8 family has 16MP sensors with 1.0um pixels. The company is quite confident about its extremely wide sensor and annoys its customers with the fact that they will not need a selfie stick to take a selfie with a group of friends.
OnePlus Nord has a left horizontal camera alignment that includes four cameras. From the first teasing, the company has teased this camera installation can offer top experience. The main camera is a 48MP sensor with f / 1.75 aperture, OIS and EIS. It is rare to see OIS on mid-range phones, in this respect, the OnePlus Nord is ahead of the competition. The installation is completed with an extremely wide 8MP unit with 119º lens. In addition, we have a 2MP and 5MP macro for depth detection. Unfortunately, there is no dedicated zoom camera. However, this combination supports 4K @ 30fps video recording.
The company even provides cine functionality that allows users to record 21: 9 videos in 4K resolution. Last but not least, the OnePlus slow motion feature is available, but don’t expect 960fps videos here. Instead, you will receive FHD resolution at 240fps.
OnePlus Nord 5G – Other aspects
The OnePlus Nord draws power from a 4,115mAh battery. This is equivalent to current flagships and the company even provides a Warp Charge 30T charger. This technology can provide 70% charge in just 30 minutes. The phone has a USB-C port and, unfortunately, does not have a 3.5 mm headphone jack. You can always use USB-C for wired headphones. However, the biggest trend is for the TWS headset and OnePlus even introduced its first TWS headset today.
Unfortunately, the handset does not come with water resistance. However, the company says that a team of more than 300 engineers has put the phone to rigorous testing to ensure its resistance to drops and sweat. The phone is available in two finishes – Blue Marble and Gray Onyx. For OnePlus models, this is very little. We believe that eventually more colors will come. Despite the limited colors, you can choose one of the six cases with a nice design. There is even one that looks like the phone has a transparent back.
Although it is a 5G smartphone, OnePlus will continue to support markets that do not yet have a 5G network, such as India. The company will provide two major operating system updates and three years of security updates. The phone has OxygenOS based on Android 10 and should be updated to Android shortly after its release.
Pricing and availability
The company will launch the Nord are two regions first – Asia and Europe. The phone will cost € 399 in Europe and 80 380 in the UK. As usual for OnePlus phones, the Nord will be much cheaper in India – 28,000 INR (almost 330 euros). Interestingly enough, India has the cheapest OnePlus 8 phones.
This price range includes the basic version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. If this is not enough for you, the company provides a variant with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, but this will get you back € 500/70 470 in Old Continent and .000 30,000 INR in India.
Amazon India lists a third variant with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage with just 25,000 INR ($ 335 / € 291). Unfortunately, this cheaper version will not be available until September.
